The Vietnam Ministry of Transport has announced a target to have 30% of cars and 22% of motorbikes powered by electricity by 2030 as part of its strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by 5.9%. To support this shift, the ministry plans to review and update national technical standards for vehicles to align with electric vehicle (EV) regulations.
A new circular will be developed to classify road vehicles, including identification markers for those using clean and green energy, as well as standards for roadside rest stops, which will feature regulations for EV charging stations. Additionally, studies will focus on expanding the charging infrastructure, which will be integrated into the country’s road transport planning from 2021 to 2030, with a long-term vision to 2050.
The ministry is also exploring mechanisms for carbon credit exchange and offsets for projects converting fossil fuel vehicles to EVs. By 2030, the ministry aims to introduce 623 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, with 423 planned for Ho Chi Minh City and 200 for Hanoi. The plan further specifies that by 2030, all road vehicles will utilize biofuel E5.
