Mana, together with research institution NORCE and energy company Equinor, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a waste-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant at Mongstad on the western coast of Norway. The collaboration aims to transform non-recyclable waste into clean fuel for the aviation industry, aligning with the EU’s ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’ initiative which mandates an increasing blend of SAF at fuel supplied at EU airports starting in 2025.
Mana owned by NG Group and based in Oslo is Norway’s first company dedicated to converting non-recyclable waste into clean fuels. The proposed SAF facility is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 70% compared to traditional aviation fuel, positioning SAF as a key component in the effort to decarbonise aviation.
“We are excited to announce this early phase partnership, where companies from each side of the value chain are joining forces to develop the kind of complex project needed to realise the green transition. We share a joint vision and bring highly complementary expertise and experience to the table. By fully leveraging the energy potential in non-recyclable waste, we can be a significant part of the solution to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, like aviation,” said Jon Bergan, CEO, Mana.
