In a major step towards environmental sustainability, the Anambra State Government (Nigeria) has teamed up with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Coca-Cola Foundation, and TechnoServe to enhance plastic waste recycling efforts.
At a recent meeting Dr. Felix Odimegwu, the state Commissioner for Environment, stressed the urgent need for effective waste separation and recycling. “Plastic waste poses an environmental threat if not properly managed and recycled,” he said, aligning with Anambra’s commitment to sustainable development.
The commissioner also announced the launch of the second season of the ‘All Anambra Communities Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge,’ aimed at reducing waste, promoting recycling, and creating jobs. This initiative underscores Anambra’s dedication to a cleaner, greener future.
Dr. Odimegwu emphasised the role of partnerships in raising awareness about waste separation and leveraging the circular economy.
TechnoServe Nigeria’s Country Director, Adesuwa Akinboro, represented by Senior Programme Manager Benneth Obasiohia, echoed the importance of joint efforts to tackle plastic pollution. With Nigeria recycling only 12% of its plastic waste, Obasiohia called for united action to achieve a cleaner, greener Anambra State.
