Iberdrola secures contract for 791 MW offshore wind farm in US

Iberdrola, through its US subsidiary Avangrid, has been awarded a contract to develop the 791 MW New England Wind 1 offshore wind farm, marking a significant milestone in the region’s push for clean energy. Once operational, the facility will provide emissions-free energy to 400,000 homes in Massachusetts, playing a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing the state’s climate goals.

The project is expected to deliver environmental benefits equivalent to removing 300,000 gasoline-powered cars from the roads annually. It will also bring significant economic impact to the region, creating over 4,400 full-time jobs and generating $3 billion in local investment. Among the infrastructure developments tied to the project are a new marshalling port in Salem and an offshore wind manufacturing facility in New Bedford.

If the power purchase agreement is approved, construction is slated to begin in 2025, with full commercial operation anticipated by 2029. New England Wind 1 will be located adjacent to Vineyard Wind 1, the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the US, which is already under construction. Both projects will play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and cutting consumer energy costs in the region.
