Canada is accelerating the development and deployment of clean energy and technologies to create well-paying jobs, attract global investment, and position itself as a leading clean energy supplier for democratic allies—all while striving to meet its ambitious climate goals. Atlantic Canada is playing a crucial role in this transition, with experts predicting the region will create approximately 100,000 new clean energy jobs by mid-century.
In a significant step toward this vision, Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, announced a $9.25-million investment through the Energy Innovation Programme for two clean energy projects led by Net Zero Atlantic (NZA). This funding, on behalf of Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, aims to advance offshore wind energy and promote clean technologies in the Atlantic region, supporting efforts to decarbonise its electricity grid and supply affordable, reliable and clean energy.
“In the Atlantic, and in fact across Canada, clean energy is presenting an unparalleled opportunity to deliver affordable and reliable energy while seizing enormous economic opportunities for Canadian workers. A clean grid will underpin economic competitiveness and prosperity moving forward, and Net Zero Atlantic is a great example of the work underway to get there,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.
Of the total investment, $6 million will go toward the Atlantic Canada Offshore Wind Integration and Transmission Study. This comprehensive study will assess how offshore wind energy can contribute to a cleaner electricity grid in the region and explore opportunities for exporting renewable electricity and clean hydrogen.
An additional $3.25 million will support the Net Zero Emerging Concepts and Technologies Research Programme, which focuses on research and development of new clean technologies. This initiative aims to help Atlantic Canada reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet its climate targets.
“At the heart of Net Zero Atlantic’s initiatives lies a commitment to innovation and sustainability. By investing in cutting-edge research and fostering the development of new clean technologies, we’re paving the way for Atlantic Canada to achieve its net-zero targets while cultivating sustainable regional economic opportunities,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for Central Nova Scotia.
Alisdair McLean, P.Eng. Chief Executive Officer, Net Zero Atlantic said, “Atlantic Canada has the potential to be a key provider of clean energy and clean technologies that both Canada and the world need. Thanks to the support from Natural Resources Canada, we are laying the foundation for a new energy industry and accelerating the emergence of locally conceived innovations.”
