Spain’s first hydrogen pipeline injection by Redexis inaugurated

Redexis, a Spanish infrastructure company, has become the first in Europe to inject hydrogen produced from renewable energy into the natural gas supply through a dedicated hydrogen pipeline. The project is a crucial part of Spain’s decarbonisation strategy and a major step toward integrating green hydrogen into the country’s existing natural gas infrastructure.

The pipeline, located in Mallorca, is part of the Green Hysland initiative, supported by the European Union’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership Redexis officials highlighted the project’s role in demonstrating the feasibility of blending renewable hydrogen with natural gas, setting a model for similar efforts across Europe.

The hydrogen pipeline begins at Camino de las Baterías and connects to the San Juan-Cas Tresorer-Son Reus primary transport pipeline. The blending process uses a static mixer to inject the required volume of hydrogen into high-velocity natural gas streams, ensuring uniform gas composition and reducing turbulence. This blend is available to all natural gas customers connected to the system in Mallorca.

Redexis is the only company in Spain authorised by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to install and operate the green hydrogen injection system. “This achievement represents a before and after in the Spanish energy transition. We not only reaffirm Redexis’ commitment to sustainability but also establish a pioneering model that can be replicated in other regions and countries,” said Fidel López Soria, CEO of Redexis, during the inauguration ceremony.

The project, as part of the Green Hysland initiative, showcases the potential of renewable hydrogen in Europe’s clean energy transition. Margalida Prohens, president of the government of the Balearic Islands, called the project a critical step in the region’s energy transition. “The Balearic Islands are taking another step on the road to energy transition by being pioneers in the implementation of the first hydrogen pipeline to transport green hydrogen for injection into the natural gas network, clean energy essential for the decarbonisation of our islands and in the fight against climate change. It is also an opportunity for the reindustrialisation of our islands, making them benchmarks for innovation and attracting green investment,” she said.

Officials emphasised that the project could serve as a framework for future hydrogen development in other parts of Spain. “This pioneering project paves the way for the significant potential of green hydrogen generation in our country,” said Miguel González Suela, Undersecretary for Ecological Transition. “Thanks to the framework promoted by the government, which has provided security and support mechanisms worth 3 billion euros, we are generating an attractive ecosystem to attract investments and innovative projects such as this one, which will contribute to accelerating the ecological transition. Together, we are creating the conditions for Spain to be a leader in the global hydrogen market,” Suela added.

The Green Hysland initiative involves over 30 partners, including energy companies and technology centers, working together to advance hydrogen’s role in Europe’s clean energy transition. Redexis remains the only company in Spain authorised by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to install the green hydrogen injection system.
