Canada’s North Star project listed on Puro.earth’s carbon removal platform

Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) and Carbon Alpha have announced that their North Star project, a bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) initiative, has passed Puro.earth’s Preliminary Assessment and securing its listing as a Future Facility on the carbon removal platform. The North Star project is the first Canadian carbon removal venture to be featured on Puro.earth, marking a significant milestone in the development of sustainable carbon capture technologies in Canada.

The North Star project, a bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) initiative, underwent a comprehensive review by Puro.earth, which evaluated its design documents to ensure alignment with the Puro Standard and the Geological Stored Carbon methodology. This assessment covered technical criteria, environmental safeguards, biomass sustainability, lifecycle analysis, and community co-benefits, confirming the project’s adherence to high environmental and technical standards.

“We’re thrilled to see this joint carbon dioxide removal (CDR) collaboration of Carbon Alpha and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council in Saskatchewan, which promises to have a profound impact on wildfire mitigation activities,” said Joseph Kochanski, Head of Operations, Americas, Puro.earth. “We congratulate Carbon Alpha for successfully completing our preliminary assessment process for being issued CO2 Removal Certificates for their promising BECCS project and look forward to the next steps in the deployment of the facility.”

The Puro.earth listing positions North Star to move forward in securing CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) as it advances toward operational deployment.  This recognition reflects the North Star project’s commitment to creating long-term climate benefits by capturing and storing carbon while generating renewable bioenergy.

Puro.earth is the world’s leading carbon-crediting platform for durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Via the Puro Standard’s rigorous carbon credit methodologies, suppliers that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for at least 100 years are certified and issued CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) into the transparent Puro Registry.
