Enagás, Spain’s gas infrastructure company, and Gasunie, the Dutch gas infrastructure operator, have formalised an agreement to collaborate on projects for sustainable CO2 management, as well as the storage and transport of decarbonised molecules such as green hydrogen and green ammonia from Spain to the Netherlands. The MoU was signed in Groningen by Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo and Gasunie CEO Willemien Terpstra.
This partnership is set to support European decarbonisation targets through integrated logistics chains that enable cross-border transport of decarbonised molecules. The companies will conduct feasibility studies and analyses to create a logistics chain for sustainable CO2 management, as well as green hydrogen and green ammonia transport.
Planned projects include the storage and transport of CO2, including biogenic CO2 from biomass processes, between Spain and the Netherlands. Certified with guarantees of origin, this CO2 can be used in methanol production, while the export of ammonia and other decarbonised molecules will be facilitated by multimolecule terminals. Additionally, the agreement involves identifying potential industrial offtakers in sectors such as fertilisers and maritime transport.
The MoU outlines an action plan for the coming months, detailing periodic meetings between Enagás and Gasunie to monitor project progress and refine objectives. This agreement reinforces both companies’ roles in contributing to the EU’s sustainable energy transition.
