Toyota is showcasing a range of sustainable innovations at the Japan Mobility Bizweek, including its ambitious vision for a future powered by portable hydrogen cartridges. These cartridges could potentially serve as ‘swappable’ power sources for next-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
Initially developed by Toyota’s mobility technology subsidiary, Woven (formerly Woven Planet), the hydrogen cartridge project began with a working prototype in 2022. Since then, the concept has evolved, with Toyota making significant advancements. The latest cartridges are lighter, more portable, and benefit from Toyota’s expertise in reducing the size and weight of hydrogen tanks used in their FCEVs.
The concept features compact, hand-carryable hydrogen cartridges that allow drivers to easily swap them out when hydrogen levels are low, avoiding the need to refuel at a station like conventional vehicles. One model even showcased a backpack designed to carry a cartridge resembling an oversized AA battery.
Toyota envisions broader applications for these refillable and renewable cartridges, such as generating electricity for homes or providing hydrogen for cooking. In collaboration with the Rinnai Corporation, Toyota will demonstrate a hydrogen-powered stove at the event. Additionally, these cartridges could be useful in emergencies, providing portable power during blackouts by connecting to applicable devices.
This flexible and sustainable energy solution highlights Toyota’s continued innovation in the hydrogen fuel cell sector.
