The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) have introduced the “Green Purchase Toolkit: From Demand Signal to Action” at the COP29 climate conference. This toolkit aims to help businesses procure low-carbon products, addressing key challenges in advancing the decarbonisation of heavy industries and long-range transport sectors.
The toolkit offers practical solutions, including collaborative procurement models, chain-of-custody frameworks, and green market makers, to assist companies in finalising offtake agreements for low-carbon materials. It also outlines the challenges and opportunities of these mechanisms, backed by real-world case studies of successful implementation.
As the first deliverable of the WBCSD Centre for Decarbonisation Demand Acceleration (CDDA), the toolkit is designed to foster clear, actionable demand for industrial decarbonisation, driving transformative change across sectors. Businesses joining CDDA contribute to collective sustainability goals while positioning themselves as pioneers in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
“Businesses need the solutions to activate their contracts for near and net zero products and services. This toolkit empowers them with mechanisms which convert their demand signal into action and drives the building of the 700 plants needed to produce the low-carbon materials required to decarbonise industry by 2030,” said Nancy Gillis, Senior Director of Industrial Decarbonisation at WBCSD.
The Green Purchase Toolkit will officially launch at a COP29 side event, marking a crucial step in providing businesses with effective strategies to accelerate industrial decarbonisation. Interested companies can reach out for membership inquiries.
