India launches sustainable aviation fuel alliance: Vijay Nirani appointed co-chair

Vijay Nirani, Founder & MD TruAlt Bioenergy | Chairperson, India Alliance for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

The Carbon Market Association of India (CMAI) has announced the appointment of Vijay Nirani, Founder and Managing Director of TruAlt Bioenergy, as the Co-Chairperson of the India Alliance on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initiative, aimed at advancing the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel in India, will officially launch at the inaugural India Climate Week (ICW) 2025, scheduled from 3-7 February at New Delhi.

The India Alliance on SAF is a collaborative effort to decarbonise India’s aviation sector and align it with global climate goals. It brings together government officials, industry leaders, and sustainability advocates to accelerate the adoption of SAF in aviation.

Key targets for the Alliance include achieving 1% SAF blend in aviation fuel by 2027, 2% SAF blend by 2028, and 5% SAF blend by 2030.

These milestones are in line with the global Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), which aims to reduce aviation emissions.

TruAlt Bioenergy, under Vijay Nirani’s leadership, is developing what is expected to become the world’s largest Ethanol-to-SAF production facility. This venture is a critical step in positioning India as a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel production, significantly contributing to the decarbonisation of the aviation industry.

Vijay Nirani will co-chair the Alliance alongside Jimmy Olsson. Speaking about the initiative, Nirani highlighted its alignment with India’s climate vision, as articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Panchamrit’ strategy.

He said, “Through collaborative industry efforts and innovative SAF production processes, we aim to support India’s leadership in achieving global climate goals, including commitments under the CORSIA framework. This marks a significant step toward building a greener and more sustainable future for aviation.”

As India advances its climate agenda, the launch of the India Alliance on SAF represents a pivotal moment in reducing aviation emissions and fostering sustainable growth. With ambitious targets and innovative projects, the Alliance is set to make India a key player in global SAF production.
