Energizer launches 100% recyclable plastic-free packaging for batteries

Plastic-Free Battery Packaging

Energizer Holdings, Inc. has introduced 100% recyclable plastic-free packaging for its Energizer battery range, marking a transition towards sustainable packaging solutions. The new paper-based design is aimed at reducing plastic waste, while enhancing the shopping and storage experience for consumers.

The updated packaging will begin rolling out in March 2024 at Walmart stores nationwide and online, with additional North American retailers set to adopt it in 2025.

The redesigned packaging was developed following extensive consumer research to improve ease of use and environmental impact. Key features of the new packaging include peel-open packs for easy battery access, compact storage boxes for better organisation of unused batteries, 100% recyclable materials, eliminating plastic waste. The transition aligns with growing consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging alternatives and reflects industry-wide efforts to reduce plastic pollution.

Tyler Lehr, Senior Vice President of General Merchandising at Walmart, welcomed the initiative, stating, “Energizer’s plastic-free packaging aligns with our commitment to sustainability. This transition provides customers with a more convenient and environmentally responsible way to purchase batteries.”

With this rollout, Energizer aims to convert over 90% of its battery packaging in North America to plastic-free alternatives by 2025. The initiative is part of a broader movement in the consumer goods sector to reduce plastic waste and improve recyclability.
