EDP Renewables North America has completed three utility-scale solar projects and signed a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with technology giant Microsoft.
As major technology firms ramp up investment in artificial intelligence (AI) data centres, many are seeking cleaner energy solutions to power their operations and reduce carbon emissions. Over the past year, Big Tech companies have committed tens of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure while prioritising renewable energy adoption.
The newly completed projects will generate approximately 400 megawatts (MW) of electricity, with Microsoft set to purchase around 389 MW and the associated renewable energy credits through the VPPA.
Located in Illinois, the projects include a 140 MW solar facility in Jacksonville and a 110 MW park near Jerseyville, both of which became operational in November 2024. The third installation, a 150 MW solar park near Austin, Texas, commenced operations in December.
With this latest agreement, EDP Renewables has expanded its total operational portfolio with Microsoft in the United States to five projects, further strengthening their collaboration in advancing clean energy solutions.
