Cepsa and PreZero Spain have entered into an agreement where PreZero Spain will supply biomethane from its projects to Cepsa, and together, they will develop biomethane plants. The partnership also focuses on converting waste into second-generation biofuels and circular chemical products, as well as decarbonising PreZero’s land fleet in Spain and Portugal.
A new biomethane plant is already under development in Huelva province, which will have an annual capacity of up to 100 GWh, enough to meet the heating needs of around 20,000 homes. PreZero will supply Cepsa with this renewable gas preferentially for projects identified as strategic by both companies, aiding in the decarbonisation of Cepsa’s and its customers’ industrial processes. The agreement also enables Cepsa to obtain biogenic CO2 from PreZero Spain’s biomethane plants for synthetic fuel production.
Additionally, PreZero will recover organic waste and used cooking oils for Cepsa to produce second-generation biofuels, which will help decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy road, maritime, and air transport. PreZero will also treat plastic waste, including single-use plastics, to supply Cepsa with raw materials for developing circular chemical products. Both companies will explore the joint development of pyrolysis plants to process non-recyclable plastic waste.
