RWE, SolarDuck launches offshore floating solar project

SolarDuck, in collaboration with RWE, has deployed its offshore floating solar (OFPV) pilot project named Merganser. Located in the Dutch North Sea, approximately 12 kilometers off Scheveningen, Merganser boasts a capacity of 0.5 megawatt peak (MWp). This initiative aims to validate structural, mooring, and electrical designs while acquiring crucial insights into manufacturing, assembly, offshore installation, and maintenance methodologies essential for future large-scale OFPV deployment.

The scalable concept features six interconnected platforms capable of withstanding harsh offshore conditions, successfully integrated into a mooring system in waters 20 meters deep. RWE continues to contribute its offshore expertise and technical support to the project.

SolarDuck’s triangular-shaped platforms are designed to float several meters above water, adapting to waves and ensuring critical components remain dry, clean, and stable. This innovative design secures the structural integrity of the semi-submersible floating structure, recently certified as the world’s first OFPV by Bureau Veritas.
