Time releases list of world’s most sustainable companies

Schneider Electric headquartered in France tops Time’s World’s Most Sustainable Companies of 2024 with a score of 88.86 out of 100, followed by Japan’s NEC Corp and Italy’s Moncler.

TIME and data firm Statista developed a methodology to identify the world’s most sustainable companies for 2024, ultimately listing the top 500. The leading companies on this list have committed to major climate programmes, such as the 1.5°C target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and received high ratings from CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).

Using this methodology, TIME and Statista evaluated companies based on stringent criteria for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, energy consumption relative to company size, emissions reductions in 2021 and 2022, and the proportion of renewable energy used in their operations. They also assessed how well companies have integrated sustainability into their business models.

Schneider Electric, which provides software and services for energy management, has not only set ambitious targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025 but also assists its customers in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency through its Sustainability Business. The company has received an “A” climate score from CDP for 12 consecutive years.

While many top-ranking companies operate in sectors that produce few physical goods—such as banking, technology, and consulting—some companies have demonstrated that sustainability is achievable even in manufacturing industries. For instance, Illumina, a U.S. biotechnology company that placed fifth on the list, recently launched its most powerful gene sequencer while cutting packaging waste by 90% compared to the previous model.

The top ten companies on the list according to their rank from 1 to 10 are – Schneider Electric, NEC Corp, Moncler, Brambles, Illumina, SGS, Sanofi, NRI, Telefónica and Cigna.
