Yara, a global crop nutrition leader, and ATOME PLC, a developer of green fertiliser projects, have signed Heads of Terms for the long-term supply of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) from ATOME’s renewable production facility in Villeta, Paraguay.
Starting in 2027, Yara will market and sell this fertiliser under the YaraBela product line. The 145 MW project, which completed its Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study in early 2024, aims to produce up to 264,000 tons of CAN fertiliser annually, significantly reducing sector emissions. ATOME PLC plans to reach the Final Investment Decision this year.
“The entry into this strategic relationship with global crop nutrition leader Yara is a significant milestone for ATOME on the path to realise our flagship Villeta Project which will be one of the largest renewable fertiliser production facilities in the Western Hemisphere. Proving significant off-taker interest in our renewable product gives a clear path to the finalisation of funding, FID and the commencement of work onsite at Villeta, said Olivier Mussat, CEO of ATOME.
“Decarbonising the food systems is at the forefront of our strategy. Signing the Heads of Terms for the Villeta project is a first step to open the opportunity to further expand our portfolio with fertilisers produced with renewable energy in the Americas. The fertilisers from Villeta will become part of a new portfolio called Yara Climate Choice, including fertilisers based upon renewable energy and carbon, capture and storage,” said Chrystel Monthean, EVP Americas at Yara.
