AI pilot cuts energy use 15% at AWS sites in Trane Technologies partnership

Trane Technologies and Amazon have reported significant energy-efficiency gains from a new AI-enabled decarbonisation initiative across key real estate assets in North America. The project, delivered through BrainBox AI – now owned by Trane Technologies – in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), demonstrates how advanced autonomous controls can materially reduce energy use and carbon emissions in large operational facilities.

Initial deployment across three Amazon Grocery fulfilment centres exceeded expectations, cutting energy consumption by nearly 15% — more than double the original targets. BrainBox AI’s technology autonomously optimises heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, lowering energy use, emissions and operating costs without affecting comfort or performance.

Following the successful pilots, Amazon plans to roll out the technology across more than 30 additional grocery fulfilment and distribution sites in the United States. A further pilot in Amazon’s grocery stores is scheduled to begin in 2026.

Riaz Raihan, Senior Vice-President and Chief Digital Officer at Trane Technologies, said the collaboration shows how sustainable technologies can generate “strong returns while benefiting the planet,” adding that the project helps advance both operational and environmental goals for Amazon.

The initiative supports Amazon’s wider strategy to decarbonise existing buildings using smart systems while also prioritising low-carbon materials in new construction. It forms part of the company’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under The Climate Pledge, while improving efficiency and reducing long-term costs.

Christina Minardi, Amazon’s Vice-President of Worldwide Grocery Stores Real Estate and Store Development, said the company seeks “data-driven, scalable solutions” that reduce emissions without compromising performance. “By working with Trane Technologies and the BrainBox AI team, we’re turning our buildings into intelligent systems that learn and adapt,” she said.

BrainBox AI was selected in 2024 as one of 11 innovators in the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator Climate Tech Pilot, enabling the company to trial its technology directly within Amazon’s operations. AWS tools – including services such as Amazon S3 and Amazon Bedrock – supported the deployment at the fulfilment sites.

Jean-Simon Venne, Founder and President of BrainBox AI, described the partnership as a “transformative milestone,” highlighting Amazon’s global scale and sustainability ambitions. Trane Technologies formally acquired BrainBox AI in January 2025 after more than two years of collaboration integrating AI-driven optimisation with advanced building-management systems.
