Air Liquide has signed a record number of multi-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) in 2024 as part of its voluntary low-carbon electricity sourcing programme. The agreements, covering Asia, Europe, and South America, will add over 2,500 GWh of renewable and low-carbon electricity annually, beginning in January 2025. This initiative aims to reduce emissions from the company’s existing operations and support future decarbonisation efforts.
The PPAs span key markets, including China, France, Germany, Spain, and Argentina, with contract durations ranging from three to 20 years. These deals are expected to cut Air Liquide’s annual CO₂ emissions by more than 1.2 million tonnes. Additionally, they will facilitate the development of new low-carbon projects, such as electrolyser deployment in France (Normand’Hy) and Germany (Trailblazer), while also meeting increasing demand for lower-carbon industrial gases.
Diana Schillag, a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee responsible for sustainability, emphasised the importance of low-carbon electricity in emissions reduction efforts. “The record amount of low-carbon electricity secured in 2024 demonstrates a concrete step towards decarbonisation, particularly in carbon-intensive regions,” she said.
The large-scale procurement of renewable electricity is a key element of Air Liquide’s decarbonisation strategy, which also includes upgrading infrastructure to improve energy efficiency and advancing carbon capture and storage technologies.
