BBVA surpasses €300bn in sustainable financing ahead of schedule

Spanish multinational financial services provider, BBVA, has set a new record in sustainable financing, channelling €99 billion ($102 billion) in 2024, bringing its total to €304 billion ($314 billion) since 2018. The bank reached its €300 billion ($310 billion) target one year early, reinforcing its commitment to climate investment and ESG financing.

“Sustainability represents a major business opportunity, and its potential is expanding faster than expected,” said Javier Rodríguez Soler, BBVA’s Global Head of Sustainability and Corporate Banking. “With this milestone reached ahead of schedule, we continue to accelerate decarbonisation efforts and support clients in adopting green technologies.”

Between January 2018 and December 2024, BBVA’s sustainable financing was allocated to climate action and natural capital preservation (78%) and social initiatives, including education, healthcare, and financial inclusion (22%).

BBVA initially set a goal of €100 billion in sustainable business for 2018-2025, later revising it to €200 billion in 2021 and then €300 billion in 2022. With its ambitious targets exceeded, the bank continues to expand green financing efforts globally.
