ClimeFi unveils BECCS initiative with Stockholm Exergi for carbon removal buyers

ClimeFi has launched ‘Beyond Emissions’, a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at expanding access to Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) for carbon removal buyers. The programme’s first opportunity involves Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS project.

The initiative lowers barriers for companies looking to participate in large-scale carbon removal projects by offering preferred commercial terms, risk assessments, and contractual guarantees. This effort aligns with ClimeFi’s mission to drive market adoption of carbon offsetting solutions.

Large-scale BECCS projects require substantial buyer offtake commitments, often making access difficult for corporations—even those with long-term carbon removal goals. ClimeFi’s Beyond Emissions aims to bridge this gap by reducing the minimum transaction size to 1,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum, making BECCS more accessible. It also provides comprehensive due diligence conducted by ClimeFi and a panel of carbon finance experts.

The initiative also aims to ensure compliance with the European Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) through a contractual guarantee. It also offers price guarantees and up-front transparency on commercial terms and eliminates upfront commitments for buyers while allowing them to secure preferred terms.

The first opportunity under the initiative is Beccs Stockholm, Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS facility. Supported by the Swedish government’s SEK 20 billion ($1.8 billion) investment over 15 years, the project is set to become one of the world’s largest carbon capture initiatives.

The Beccs Stockholm project is led by Stockholm Exergi, Sweden’s foremost district energy supplier, which is 50% owned by the City of Stockholm. This partnership between public and private entities ensures a strong financial foundation for the project.  To date, Stockholm Exergi has secured €180 million from the EU Innovation Fund, making it the most heavily subsidised BECCS project in Europe.

With robust public and private investment, carbon removal buyers can be assured of the project’s financial stability, reduced reputational risks, and minimal chances of delays or underperformance. This stability makes Beccs Stockholm an attractive and reliable option for businesses looking to secure long-term carbon removal commitments.

The new BECCS facility at Beccs Stockholm is projected to capture over 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually starting in 2028.

Erik Rylander, Head of Carbon Removal at Stockholm Exergi said, “With Beccs Stockholm, we will provide permanent removals to corporations seeking to meet their net-zero targets.”

Paolo Piffaretti, Co-Founder & CEO of ClimeFi said, “This first-of-its-kind initiative will accelerate the adoption of climate-critical projects, starting with Stockholm Exergi. By enabling all CDR buyers to participate in high-quality carbon removal, we are creating meaningful impact across industries while unlocking value for a diverse range of buyers.”
