Beijing plans to become global leader in green economy by 2035

At the recent Beijing Municipal Administrative Centre Green Development Forum, Beijing announced an ambitious initiative to position itself as a global benchmark for green economy development by 2035. The city outlined a strategic roadmap focusing on seven key green industries: advanced energy, synthetic biomanufacturing, alternative proteins, intelligent connected new energy vehicles, climate resilience and environmental protection, green finance, and green-focused professional services.

To drive this transformation, Beijing will prioritise green technology innovation, support the expansion of green industries, enhance sustainable city infrastructure, promote green cultural values, and foster both domestic and international collaboration on green initiatives.

The initiative follows a two-stage timeline. In the first phase, from now until 2027, Beijing aims to achieve an average annual 10% increase in green technology patents, advance the green industry’s scale and specialisation, improve urban green infrastructure, elevate the city’s environmental profile, and enhance its role in green economic cooperation both within China and globally.

The second phase, spanning from 2028 to 2035, envisions a fully coordinated approach to green technology, industry, urban development, cultural engagement, and global cooperation. By 2035, Beijing aims to significantly boost the value of its green economy and achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable development.
