BP and Iberdrola strengthen green hydrogen expansion in Spain

BP and Iberdrola have awarded Toledo-based Imefy the contract to manufacture and supply the main transformer for Spain’s largest green hydrogen production facility. The 25 MW plant, located at BP’s refinery in Castellón, marks a significant step in the country’s transition to renewable hydrogen energy.

Imefy, headquartered in Los Yébenes, Toledo, will be responsible for manufacturing, supplying, and overseeing the assembly and commissioning of the three-phase power transformer. The transformer, with a capacity of 37 megavolt-amperes (MVA) and a 66/30 kilovolts (kV) transformation ratio, is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2026.

With an investment exceeding €70 million, the Castellón Green Hydrogen project is set to become operational in the second half of 2026. The initiative is expected to play a key role in reducing industrial carbon emissions, supplying green hydrogen to sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, such as ceramics chemical industries and heavy transport. The project will contribute to Spain’s hydrogen economy and support national and European climate neutrality goals by fostering sustainable energy development.
