Neoenergia, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group, has launched Brazil’s first commercial bus powered by green hydrogen. The zero-emission vehicle is set to operate on the iconic Rota Monumental tourist line in the Federal District, offering residents and visitors a completely clean transport solution through the heart of the national capital.
The project is the result of a strategic partnership between Neoenergia, the Federal District Government (GDF), and TEVX Motors Group. The bus is fuelled by green hydrogen produced at a dedicated refuelling station in Taguatinga, which uses water electrolysis powered by a photovoltaic plant to ensure a 100% renewable energy cycle.
David Benavent del Prado, Commercial Executive Director at Neoenergia, highlighted the strategic importance of the launch: “This project boosts the electrification of the economy and strengthens Brazil’s position in new sustainable energy chains.”
The vehicle, which emits only water vapour, has a capacity for 71 passengers and a range of approximately 300 kilometres. Refuelling takes between 10 to 15 minutes, offering a high-efficiency alternative to traditional fossil-fuelled public transport. The Rota Monumental service will be free of charge, featuring a guide to introduce passengers to landmarks such as the Three Powers Square and the Cathedral.
Secretary of Tourism, Cristiano Araújo, noted the initiative’s dual impact: “This is an innovative project that combines the appreciation of cultural heritage with sustainability… positioning the capital as a modern, intelligent destination aligned with the best environmental practices.”
Cadu Souza, CEO of TEVX, added: “The strength of this project lies in its pioneering spirit in opening the doors of a tourist route that takes in our history with the innovation of a hydrogen solution that contributes to a more sustainable future for mobility in the country.”
The infrastructure in Taguatinga, representing an investment of over R$30 million via the ANEEL Research and Development Programme, will also serve as a Knowledge and Innovation Centre. This hub will conduct research into expanding green hydrogen technology across industrial and public transport sectors throughout Brazil.
