CaixaBank introduces carbon footprint verification service for business clients

CaixaBank has launched a new service enabling businesses, from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to large corporations, to verify their carbon footprint. The initiative builds on the bank’s existing CO2 calculator, requiring companies to have previously measured their emissions before accessing the verification service.

The verification process is carried out in collaboration with AENOR and follows the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol standard. It ensures accurate assessment of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across various sectors, including agriculture, waste management, oil and gas, and services. Businesses can also voluntarily verify Scope 3 emissions, covering supply chain activities, travel, and waste treatment. The service provides officially recognised accreditation, which may help businesses comply with upcoming environmental regulations and reporting requirements.

Measuring and reporting emissions is a complex process, particularly for businesses new to carbon footprint assessments. To address this challenge, CaixaBank introduced a carbon footprint calculator in 2024, available via its website and app. Developed with independent experts, the tool operates using a verified calculation engine aligned with international standards.

The calculator identifies key sources of greenhouse gas emissions, both direct (fuel consumption by facilities and vehicles) and indirect (electricity use and business travel). It also provides comparative insights and recommendations to help businesses make informed decisions on emission reduction strategies.

Beyond compliance with regulatory requirements, the tool is designed to support operational efficiency and sustainability initiatives. A dedicated team of professionals across CaixaBank’s Corporate Banking divisions will assist businesses in their decarbonisation efforts, offering financial solutions for sustainable investments and projects.
