Catona Climate and Tencent partner to advance decarbonisation goals

Tencent, a global technology and entertainment company, has partnered with Catona Climate, a climate finance organisation, to support its decarbonisation strategy. The collaboration includes a pre-order of 3 million tonnes of nature-based carbon removals, to be issued over 14 years between 2027 and 2040. The partnership underscores Tencent’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

Tencent’s decarbonisation plan, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations and supply chain by 2030. The company plans to reduce emissions, transition to 100% renewable energy for all electricity consumption, and address residual emissions through high-quality carbon removals.

Hao Xu, Vice President of Sustainable Social Value and Head of Tencent’s Carbon Neutrality Lab said, “Our partnership with Catona focuses on identifying and supporting effective nature-based carbon removal projects that deliver meaningful environmental and social impact.”

The collaboration prioritises nature-based solutions that address sustainability challenges while providing measurable results. Catona Climate CEO Tate Mill highlighted the importance of combining internal emissions reductions with external carbon removal efforts to drive significant climate action.

Catona and Tencent are also exploring opportunities to expand their partnership within Tencent’s Sustainable Social Value framework. This includes mobilising resources to scale global climate action and support solutions that align with long-term sustainability objectives.
