China has released a nationwide action plan to promote green consumption, as part of broader efforts to accelerate the country’s green transition and support high-quality economic development.
The plan, issued jointly by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and eight other government departments, sets out 20 policy measures across seven priority areas aimed at strengthening incentives for greener consumption. The measures cover sectors including agricultural products, household appliances and accommodation services, alongside financial and institutional support to improve the overall green consumption environment.
According to a notice published on the ministry’s official website, the initiative is intended to expand the adoption of green consumption behaviours and speed up the shift towards low-carbon production and lifestyles.
The plan places emphasis on improving the supply of green products in key livelihood-related sectors, calling for greater availability of environmentally friendly agricultural goods and wider use of energy-efficient household appliances. It also seeks to promote greener vehicle consumption by encouraging purchases of new energy vehicles and strengthening the automotive industry supply chain.
In addition, the plan supports the development of new consumption scenarios, including recreational vehicle camping, drive-in cinemas and road travel, while upgrading green service consumption through measures targeting catering, accommodation and household services.
To support new green consumption models, the action plan calls for the development of green supply chains and wider use of carbon footprint assessments. It also encourages the expansion of green leasing services and greater uptake of shared mobility, shared spaces and shared goods to improve resource efficiency.
The initiative further highlights the integration of artificial intelligence with green consumption, aiming to support the development of smart products and new application scenarios.
