Delta Air Lines partners with JetZero on fuel-efficient blended-wing aircraft

Delta Air Lines has partnered with JetZero, a California-based start-up, to develop a fuel-efficient blended-wing-body (BWB) aircraft. The design, which differs from conventional tube-and-wing structures, aims to enhance fuel efficiency and contribute to reducing aviation emissions.

JetZero received a grant from the US Air Force in 2023 to support the construction of a full-scale demonstrator, with its first flight planned for 2027. Delta will provide operational expertise to assist in making the aircraft commercially viable.

The BWB airframe is expected to achieve up to 50% greater fuel efficiency compared to current aircraft designs. As part of its sustainability initiatives, Delta is working with various partners to advance technologies that contribute to lowering emissions.

Delta’s collaboration with JetZero is the fourth major fleet partnership under its 2023 Sustainability Roadmap, which outlines measures to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Beyond fuel efficiency, the BWB aircraft’s design allows for reimagined cabin interiors. Potential changes include increased overhead bin space, more accessible seating and lavatories, and an optimised seating layout.

JetZero’s CEO, Tom O’Leary, stated that the aircraft aims to deliver substantial efficiency gains in the near future, supporting industry-wide emissions reduction goals. Delta has been involved in the project since 2023 and will continue to provide industry expertise throughout its development.

The collaboration will leverage Delta’s operational experience and infrastructure to facilitate the transition of the BWB design from concept to commercial use.
