DP World launches ‘Insetify’ carbon inset trial for European ocean freight customers

DP World has launched Insetify, a carbon inset trial aimed at helping ocean freight forwarding customers in Belgium, Portugal and Sweden reduce their Scope 3 emissions across major European trade routes.

From 1 April, carbon inset credits will be automatically issued to qualifying importers and exporters booking ocean freight services with DP World in the three countries. Customers shipping at least 25 TEUs per quarter will receive credits equivalent to 100 kg of CO₂e per TEU shipped, provided at no additional cost and distributed quarterly.

For instance, a customer shipping 50 TEUs in a quarter would receive 5 tonnes of CO₂e carbon inset credits.

The initiative builds on DP World’s existing Carbon Inset Programme at its UK ports in Southampton and London Gateway, which since its launch in January 2025 has registered more than 250,000 TEUs and issued over 9,000 tonnes of CO₂e inset credits.

Unlike traditional carbon offsets that fund external projects such as tree planting, carbon insets reduce emissions within the supply chain itself by using lower-carbon fuels or more efficient transport methods.

John Trenchard, VP – Sustainable International Supply Chains, Europe at DP World, said: “Providing customers with multiple solutions to enable the decarbonisation of supply chains is important to DP World. The Insetify trial allows for a pragmatic approach to managing residual emissions in ocean freight as part of a longer-term, holistic plan.”

The programme will also include sustainability training to help customers better understand supply chain emissions and decarbonisation strategies.
