Eni and BMW Italia have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on initiatives aimed at accelerating the energy transition within the road transport sector. The agreement outlines joint efforts to expand the use of biofuels, particularly Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and enhance electric mobility infrastructure across Italy.
The partnership is set against a backdrop of major structural change in the mobility sector, as both automotive manufacturers and energy providers respond to increasingly stringent emissions reduction targets.
Under the LOI, the two companies will work on three key areas: supporting sustainable mobility through a technology-neutral approach, advancing biofuel deployment, and expanding the electric vehicle charging network. This includes the potential rollout of new Plenitude On The Road recharging hubs and testing Enilive’s HVO in BMW diesel engines.
Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, stated: “Eni and BMW Italia, prominent leaders in their respective sectors, are pooling their technology and expertise to advance significantly towards the decarbonization of transport. Our partnership exemplifies the synergy between energy players and industry… To achieve a successful energy transition, it is crucial to combine efforts across the various economic and industrial sectors requiring decarbonization, leveraging all available sustainable technologies and industrial initiatives.”
Massimiliano Di Silvestre, President and CEO of BMW Italia, highlighted the role of biofuels in addressing current emissions: “Our approach has consistently been rooted in technological openness and in the commitment to decarbonizing through all available, highly efficient technologies… We believe that employing biofuels such as pure HVO in diesel engines presents a significant opportunity… delivering immediate environmental benefits with up to a 90% reduction in GHG emissions.”
The collaboration also extends BMW’s existing partnership with Plenitude in developing EV infrastructure, with the goal of providing wider access to dedicated services for electric vehicle customers.
