Eni and Egypt’s bioenergy association to study biogas production from agricultural waste

Eni has signed a cooperation agreement with the Bioenergy Association for Sustainable Development, which operates under Egypt’s Ministry of Environment, to conduct a feasibility study for establishing biogas production units that use agricultural and animal waste. The agreement was signed in Cairo, in the presence of Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment.

The study will examine the potential to build a biodigestion plant capable of treating waste from agricultural and livestock activities. The resulting biogas would be used to generate renewable electricity and heat, while the byproducts could serve as organic fertilisers, supporting Egypt’s circular economy. The project is also expected to contribute to greenhouse gas reduction and generate carbon credits from avoided emissions.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Environment’s strategy to expand biogas technology across Egyptian governorates and develop sustainable energy solutions that support emission reduction and rural development. It also supports Eni’s broader decarbonisation plan, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 through integrated approaches that combine energy efficiency, renewable energy, and emissions management.

Eni, which has operated in Egypt since 1954, is currently the country’s largest hydrocarbon producer and is involved in several projects promoting a sustainable energy transition.
