FIA partners with Siemens to drive sustainable innovation in motor sport

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has announced Siemens Digital Industries Software as its official digital twin sponsor, under a new multi-year agreement aimed at reshaping the future of motor sport while advancing sustainability goals.

As part of the collaboration, the FIA will expand its use of Siemens’ Xcelerator software portfolio to accelerate innovation in race car design and reduce the environmental footprint of prototype development and testing. Siemens becomes the latest organisation to join the FIA’s Global Partnership Programme, which brings together leading companies to promote safety, sustainability and technological progress across motor sport and mobility.

At the centre of the partnership is Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio, including the Designcenter NX software, which enables engineers to build precise digital models of race cars and simulate their performance in a virtual environment. This virtual-first approach is playing a key role in shaping technical regulations across single-seater categories, from Formula 1 to Formula 4, while reducing reliance on physical prototypes and wind tunnel testing.

The FIA has already used Siemens’ software to produce more than 14,000 computer-aided design parts in over 10,000 computational fluid dynamics simulations since 2022. By limiting resource-intensive physical testing, the governing body aims to cut emissions and progress towards its commitment to achieve net zero by 2030. The federation also plans to expand the use of Siemens’ Teamcenter X for product lifecycle management and integrate further Simcenter simulation tools, creating a fully connected digital ecosystem for future innovations.

Craig Edmondson, Chief Commercial Officer at the FIA, said: “We’re proud to partner with global technology leaders like Siemens to shape the future of motor sport. This collaboration shows the strength of our wider partner network, where world-class brands are helping us deliver progress across performance, safety and sustainability.”

Jason Somerville, the FIA’s Head of Aerodynamics, added: “Siemens gives us the precision tools to design and test complex aerodynamic concepts virtually, reducing environmental impact while improving performance and safety. This technology is key to ensuring racing remains closer, fairer and more competitive — all while supporting our ambition to reach net zero by 2030.”

Nand Kochhar, Vice President of Automotive and Transportation at Siemens Digital Industries Software, said: “We’re looking forward to deepening our collaboration with the FIA as their Official Digital Twin Sponsor. Siemens Xcelerator is enabling FIA engineers to design, simulate and optimise with unprecedented precision, helping deliver a more sustainable and technologically advanced future for motor sport and mobility.”
