FIT launches guidance for insurance sector’s net-zero transition

The Forum for Insurance Transition to Net Zero (FIT) has released a landmark report providing the first transition plan guidance specifically designed for underwriting portfolios within the insurance and reinsurance industry.

Titled “Underwriting the Transition”, the publication sets out a comprehensive framework to support insurers, reinsurers and brokers in developing and disclosing credible transition plans. It aims to fill a critical gap in sector-specific guidance, addressing the complex challenges faced by the industry in aligning with net-zero goals.

The guide outlines key components of a credible transition plan and offers a checklist for assessing their robustness. Drawing on real-world examples, it illustrates how market leaders are applying these principles in practice to foster a just and resilient transition to a net-zero economy.

As part of the FIT Transition Plan Project, this report follows the initiative’s first publication—“Closing the Gap”—which was unveiled at COP29 in Baku in 2024. A third and final report, set to be launched at COP30 in Belém, Brazil later this year, will present integrated guidance linking underwriting and investment strategies, forming a holistic “total balance sheet” approach for the sector.

The initiative comes amid growing regulatory and investor expectations for credible and transparent sustainability disclosures within the insurance market.
