Gigablue, a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology company, has partnered with SkiesFifty, a sustainability-focused aviation company, to sequester 200,000 tonnes of CO2 over the next four years. This partnership represents the largest marine-based carbon dioxide removal offtake agreement, the companies informed.
Gigablue’s marine carbon fixation and sequestration (MCFS) method uses phytoplankton to capture and store carbon dioxide. A specially designed substrate promotes phytoplankton growth, which absorbs carbon. Once the substrate sinks, the captured carbon is stored on the ocean floor for long-term sequestration.
“This agreement demonstrates the scalability of our technology,” said Ori Shaashua, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Gigablue.
The company aims to remove one gigaton of carbon dioxide by 2035, building on a growing pipeline of offtake agreements.
“Aviation’s path to net-zero requires innovative technologies,” said Simon Talling-Smith, Founding Partner at SkiesFifty. “Gigablue’s solution stood out for its environmental safety and scalability.”
Gigablue’s platform integrates artificial intelligence and geospatial data to optimise deployment zones, while its measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV) framework ensures reliable carbon storage.
