Google has announced a collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India to establish the Google Center for Climate Technology on Manthan, the PSA’s national platform for research and development.
The initiative, unveiled alongside discussions at the India AI Summit, is aimed at supporting climate technology research and advancing decarbonisation efforts through artificial intelligence and data-driven solutions.
The Google Center for Climate Technology will provide access to sustainability-focused AI models and application programming interfaces (APIs), while supporting research talent and cross-sector collaboration. The centre is expected to act as a platform for scalable research and innovation in climate technologies.
In its initial phase, the programme is inviting research and innovation proposals in three priority areas: building a skilled workforce for the climate-tech transition; advancing research and deployment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF); and promoting low-carbon construction materials to reduce emissions linked to urbanisation.
Selected applicants will receive support to develop AI-enabled solutions aimed at addressing environmental challenges in India and beyond.
The collaboration also builds on Google’s broader sustainability initiatives in India, including investments in clean energy projects adding 336 megawatts to the grid and work on agricultural AI models designed to strengthen climate resilience.
The partnership with the PSA is intended to align India’s AI development goals with its clean energy and sustainability objectives.
