Google-Shell deal extends life of Netherlands’ first offshore wind farm

Google has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Shell that will extend the operational life of the Netherlands’ first offshore wind farm, marking the first time a corporate PPA has been used to prolong the lifespan of such a project.

Under the agreement, Google will purchase 100% of the 108-megawatt capacity from the wind farm, enabling Shell to secure permit extensions and carry out critical upgrades. The deal will extend the wind farm’s operation by at least four years beyond its original decommissioning date, avoiding the early retirement of a vital clean energy source.

The move reflects Google’s continued investment in carbon-free energy in the Netherlands, where it has now supported over 1 gigawatt of clean energy generation through PPAs. The company said the partnership demonstrates its broader commitment to a carbon-free future and aims to inspire similar efforts to preserve and revitalise aging clean energy assets.
