Hapag-Lloyd and DSV sign deal for 18,000 tonnes of scope 3 shipping cuts

Hapag-Lloyd and DSV have signed a two-year Ship Green framework agreement covering the purchase of Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions generated through the use of sustainable marine fuels.

Under the agreement, DSV has contracted 18,000 tonnes of CO₂e emission reductions on a well-to-wake basis, starting in 2026. The reductions will be achieved primarily through the use of second-generation biofuels derived from waste- and residue-based feedstocks across Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet.

The deal builds on cooperation between the two companies that began in 2022, when they first collaborated on the use of sustainable marine biofuels. The new framework also allows for the inclusion of additional sustainable fuel types, broadening the scope of the partnership.

The agreement operates under a book-and-claim mechanism, enabling customers to claim verified emission reductions irrespective of the specific vessel or route on which the fuel is used. Only emissions savings from biofuel already consumed within Hapag-Lloyd’s owned and operated fleet will be allocated to DSV.

Danny Smolders, Managing Director Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd, said the agreement demonstrates how carriers and freight forwarders can work together to scale lower-emission shipping solutions. Michael Hollstein, Head of Ocean Product at DSV, described sustainable marine fuels as a scalable approach to reducing CO₂ emissions in global supply chains.

Hapag-Lloyd has set a target of achieving net-zero fleet operations by 2045, while DSV aims to reach net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2050. Through its Ship Green programme, Hapag-Lloyd enables customers to claim verified emissions reductions by replacing conventional marine fuel oil with sustainable alternatives.

Biofuels are currently considered the most widely available and scalable lower-emission fuel option in ocean freight.
