HD Hyundai and Maersk partner on ship decarbonisation and logistics efficiency

HD Hyundai and A.P. Moller – Maersk have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on vessel decarbonisation technologies and to enhance HD Hyundai’s global supply chain through Maersk’s logistics services.

The agreement, formalised at HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Centre, will initially focus on testing fuel-saving and emission-reducing technologies on one of Maersk’s container ships. This includes the application of Avikus’ HiNAS navigation system and HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s OCEANWISE route optimisation software, designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Both firms also plan to explore further opportunities in retrofitting vessels for improved environmental performance. This will include engine optimisation, increasing cargo capacity, installing dual-fuel propulsion systems, and conducting joint research on the use of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) for onboard clean energy generation.

The MoU extends a longstanding partnership between the two companies. Since 2021, HD Hyundai has received orders for 19 methanol-fuelled container ships from Maersk. The shipbuilder delivered the world’s first ultra-large container ship powered by methanol last year.

In addition to technical cooperation, HD Hyundai will expand its use of Maersk’s logistics network. This includes increasing volumes on Maersk’s East-West ocean routes and leveraging its air freight, land transport, and warehousing services. The logistics partnership will initially serve HD Hyundai’s subsidiaries, such as HD Hyundai XiteSolution and HD Hyundai Marine Solution, before being extended across other affiliates.

The agreement reflects a broader industry shift towards decarbonisation in maritime transport and integrated supply chain solutions. Further details on the outcomes of the trial and joint research are expected in the coming months.
