HKEX, Brazil’s B3 sign MOU to boost sustainable finance and carbon markets

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has signed a memorandum of understanding with B3, Brazil’s stock exchange operator, to promote sustainable finance and support the development of carbon markets across their respective regions.

The agreement extends HKEX’s sustainability partnerships to South America, underlining its commitment to the global transition to a low-carbon economy and recognising the region’s growing importance to global climate solutions.

Under the MOU, HKEX and B3 will collaborate to advance carbon market development and explore opportunities in commodities across Hong Kong and Brazil. The two exchanges will establish regular communication channels, examine the potential for cross-listing equities, and identify new carbon and ESG product opportunities linking Asia and South America.

Paul Chow, Chief Sustainability Officer at HKEX, said the partnership builds on the exchange’s existing carbon market initiatives, including its Core Climate platform, and reinforces its commitment to advancing sustainable finance through cross-border collaboration. He added that the collaboration aims to support the development of international carbon standards, encourage innovation and accelerate progress towards a low-carbon economy.

Sérgio Gullo, Director of International Business Development for Asia and Oceania at B3, said the cooperation strengthens B3’s role in the transition to a sustainable economy while opening new international opportunities for Brazilian markets. He noted that expanding B3’s global presence will help companies access ESG products and support the development of solutions that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

The partnership forms part of HKEX’s broader strategy to expand its sustainable finance footprint and help build transparent, inclusive and globally connected carbon markets. By deepening ties with B3, HKEX aims to strengthen its role as a connector of markets, fostering innovation and cross-regional collaboration to support a more resilient and inclusive global financial ecosystem.
