IKEA launches fully electric heavy transport project in Italy

Inter IKEA Group has launched its first fully electrified heavy road transport project in Italy, marking a new phase in the decarbonisation of its national logistics operations. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with long-standing logistics provider LC3 Trasporti and Mercedes-Benz Trucks.

The project, which officially begins in October, focuses on the electrification of long-distance road transport and is intended to support European mobility decarbonisation targets. It will be rolled out in phases, starting with two battery electric trucks already in operation. The fleet is expected to expand to more than ten Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 electric trucks by the third quarter of 2026.

The vehicles will be used for daily container transport between the ports of Genoa and La Spezia and the Piacenza Distribution Centre, as well as for store deliveries across Northern Italy from the same logistics hub.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to enable more than 1.2 million kilometres of zero-emission travel annually, eliminating CO₂ emissions from these transport routes. In addition to emissions reductions, the electric trucks will also remove noise emissions, supporting quieter night-time deliveries and reducing urban noise pollution.

Inter IKEA Group said the initiative reflects its wider commitment to phasing out fossil fuels and internal combustion engines, including in heavy road transport, a sector that has traditionally been difficult to decarbonise.

“This is an ambitious project aimed at significantly reducing our transportation climate footprint in Italy,” said Ewelina Taylor, Global Transport Manager at Inter IKEA Group. “Thanks to this new triangle partnership we’re able to define the optimal set-up together and come up with a solution that reduces total costs, while also contributing to a cleaner and quieter environment.”

Michele Ambrogi, Commercial Director of LC3 Trasporti, said the project marked “a turning point” for the company. “The energy transition is a challenge we have chosen to face with determination. Collaboration across the supply chain is the only real driver of change.”

Maurizio Pompei, CEO of Daimler Truck Italia, added: “Seeing the eActros 600 enter service in a project of this scale confirms that the energy transition is already happening, and shows how technological innovation can align with environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.”
