South Korea’s national flagship carrier HMM and IKEA Supply Chain Operations joined hands to utilise HMM’s low-carbon ocean transport solution to support shipping decarbonisation. This initiative will reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by replacing conventional fossil fuels with environmentally responsible, waste-based biofuels during the transportation of IKEA products via sea route.
HMM’s Green Sailing Service allows stakeholders to reduce Scope 3 carbon emissions by giving them an opportunity to report carbon reductions directly resulting from HMM vessels using low-carbon fuels. The biofuels for this service are ISCC-certified and made from waste-based biomass. HMM is deploying these sustainable biofuels for its FIM service, which connects the Far East, India, and the Mediterranean.
Under the agreement, approximately 11,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be reduced from March 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, by using these biofuels for the entire IKEA ocean cargo shipment with HMM. This reduction in CO2 emissions is equivalent to transporting 14,534 TEU of Zero Emission Cargo from Asia (Busan) to Europe (Rotterdam), according to HMM.
