Inherit Carbon Solutions, a carbon removal company, in partnership with Norway’s largest wastewater treatment facility Veas and its subsidiary Hoop CO₂, has initiated a project aimed at capturing and permanently storing CO₂ from wastewater. This collaboration marks the first in carbon removal from wastewater, a step that could have global implications in the fight against climate change.
The project is being implemented at Veas’ plant in Slemmestad, serving Oslo, Asker, Bærum, and Nesodden. It involves capturing CO₂ from wastewater, transporting it, and storing it permanently underground. Hoop CO₂, a fully owned subsidiary of Veas, will handle the storage process, with the goal of developing scalable solutions that can be adapted globally.
Kaja Voss, Co-CEO and founder of Inherit Carbon Solutions said, “This first-of-its-kind carbon removal project represents a crucial step in the fight against climate change. We are proud to collaborate with a player like Veas to make carbon removal from wastewater a reality and believe that this can be a precursor to similar projects worldwide. Wherever there is sewage, there will be CO₂, and this can be a source to also reduce the amount of CO2 from the atmosphere, says Voss. We are very proud that the first project of its kind, for which there is massive global potential, will be here in Norway. ”
Jan Berge, CEO of Hoop CO₂ said, “With this development, Oslo, Asker, Bærum, and Nesodden are at the forefront of sustainable technology innovation. When we first heard that this was possible, there was no doubt that we wanted to be the first in the world to take this quantum leap into the future.”
