Korean defense companies like Kia, Hanwha Ocean and Hyundai Rotem are equipping tanks and submarines with hydrogen-powered systems and hybrid engines to reduce carbon footprints and environmental sustainability.
Recently, Kia unveiled its “Hydrogen ATV Concept Car” at the “WDS 2024” defense exhibition in Saudi Arabia. This vehicle uses hydrogen fuel cells as its power source, resulting in less noise and heat compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Likewise, Hyundai Rotem is also making strides in this field with the development of a hydrogen fuel cell-based future unmanned platform called the ‘Defense Drone.’
The defense industry’s shift towards eco-friendly technologies is part of a broader global push towards sustainability and reducing carbon footprints. The advancements in green technology, such as hydrogen fuel cells and hybrid engines, offer significant benefits over traditional fossil fuel-based systems, including improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and enhanced operational capabilities.
As the defense industry continues to innovate and integrate these eco-friendly technologies, the potential for significant improvements in military operations and environmental sustainability becomes increasingly apparent.
