LEGO Group unveils major solar expansion for US factory

The LEGO Group has announced plans to construct a massive solar park at its new manufacturing site in Virginia, marking a primary step towards its goal of running the facility on 100% renewable energy.

Construction is set to begin this summer on an 80-acre solar farm featuring more than 30,700 ground-mounted panels. Combined with a further 10,080 panels installed on the factory roofs, the project will boast a total capacity of approximately 28 MWp.

Jesus Ibañez, General Manager of LEGO Manufacturing Virginia, stated: “These initiatives are key to increasing our use of renewable energy and support our ongoing commitment towards more sustainable operations.”

The factory project is progressing rapidly following the completion of the building’s steel frame in October 2025. In a bid to further reduce its carbon footprint, the company is using mass timber—a renewable material that sequesters carbon—for its office spaces, with “topping out” expected later this spring.

The site aims to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the highest standard for green building design.

Once fully operational, the 1.7 million-square-foot facility will follow the LEGO Group’s global blueprint for precision manufacturing while maintaining a strict zero waste to landfill policy.
