Liberty Mutual Investments backs Ara Partners in strategic energy and infrastructure partnership

Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI), the investment arm of Liberty Mutual Group, has entered into a new cross-platform partnership with Ara Partners, a global private markets firm specialising in industrial decarbonisation.

The agreement includes a strategic commitment from LMI to support Ara Partners’ Energy and Infrastructure investment platforms, enabling both firms to collaborate on opportunities aligned with their respective mandates.

Ara Partners focuses on advancing the decarbonisation and resilience of industrial and energy value chains. Ara Infrastructure, launched in 2022, invests in new infrastructure and the repurposing of high-quality legacy assets essential for a lower-carbon economy. In 2024, the firm introduced Ara Energy to acquire and optimise energy businesses and assets across North America and Europe, with a focus on operational improvement and, where commercially viable, decarbonisation.

Under the partnership, LMI and Ara will collaborate on a range of existing and future investments, including:

  • JET, a fuel retail network operating across Germany and Austria
  • Centric Fiber, a fibre-to-the-home provider serving large master-planned new-build communities in Texas, Florida, Arizona and North Carolina
  • Natural gas-fired combined-cycle power assets in wholesale power markets in the north-eastern United States
  • Ethanol production facilities with active and planned carbon capture initiatives
  • An anchor investment in Ara Energy Fund I

Charley Poole, Head of Energy & Infrastructure at Liberty Mutual Investments, said the firm believes Ara Partners is well positioned to capitalise on opportunities arising from rising global energy demand. “LMI is proud to join Ara Partners as a long-term, strategic partner as they pursue transformative outcomes across the energy and infrastructure sectors to meet this demand,” he said.

George Yong, Partner and Co-Head of Ara Infrastructure, said the partnership combines Ara’s development expertise with LMI’s broad reach across North America’s industrial, real estate and infrastructure ecosystem, creating significant opportunities to unlock value and accelerate growth.

Shameek Konar, Partner and Head of Ara Energy, added that LMI’s experience and sophistication in the energy sectors in which Ara invests make it an ideal long-term strategic partner.

The partnership marks a further expansion and diversification of LMI’s Energy & Infrastructure platform through new tactical partnerships, structures and sectors. LMI manages more than $117 billion (£92 billion) in long-term capital globally across its integrated platform on behalf of Liberty Mutual Group.
