Liverpool FC launches world’s first carbon-neutral football jersey

Premier League champions Liverpool FC have unveiled the world’s first carbon-neutral football jersey to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the club’s legendary UEFA Champions League victory in Istanbul.

Developed in collaboration with American carbon capture company 1PointFive, the special edition shirt honours Liverpool’s dramatic 2005 comeback against AC Milan, widely hailed as one of the greatest matches in football history. The initiative also represents a major step forward in sustainable sports merchandising.

The carbon footprint of each shirt will be fully neutralised through Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, which removes atmospheric CO₂ equal to that emitted during the shirt’s production. The innovation demonstrates how environmentally conscious commemorative merchandise can be delivered without compromising on quality or sentiment.

“This shirt marks a world-first in football – and there’s no better occasion to do it than the 20th anniversary of that iconic night in Istanbul,” said Lee Dwerryhouse, Senior Vice President of Merchandising at Liverpool FC. “Through our pioneering collaboration with 1PointFive, we’ve created a truly special piece for our supporters – one that celebrates the past while supporting our sustainability goals.”

The shirt design features ‘European Champions, Istanbul 2005’ embroidered in gold beneath the Liver bird crest, accompanied by five gold stars. Former club captain Sami Hyypiä, a key figure in the 2005 final, modelled the jersey at its launch. The launch aligns with Liverpool FC’s broader environmental initiatives, signalling how top-tier football clubs can embrace innovation to reduce their climate impact while celebrating iconic moments in sporting history.
