Maíra Martini appointed CEO of Transparency International

Transparency International has appointed Maíra Martini as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 February. Martini will lead the organisation’s International Secretariat, based in Berlin, Germany, and play a key role in shaping the global anti-corruption movement’s leadership.

Martini joined the Transparency International Secretariat in 2011 and has most recently served as Head of Policy & Advocacy. Her contributions have been instrumental in driving the organisation’s strategic focus on anti-money laundering, beneficial ownership transparency, and tackling illicit financial flows. A qualified lawyer, Martini also holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.

“I am deeply honoured to take on the role of CEO at Transparency International. As the world faces significant challenges – polarised governments, undue influence and the capture of policies aimed at addressing critical issues such as inequality, environmental degradation and the climate crisis – corruption often lies at the heart of these problems. It weakens democratic institutions, undermines accountability and diverts the resources needed for meaningful solutions. As the leading anti-corruption organisation, it is our responsibility to step up and confront these systemic issues head-on,” said Martini.

In addition to her tenure at Transparency International, Martini has authored numerous reports on anti-corruption and good governance. She has also served on the steering groups of OpenOwnership and the Anti-Corruption Data Collective. Her work was honoured in 2022 with Transparency International’s prestigious Amalia Award for Professional Excellence.

“We very much look forward to working with Maira Martini, whose talent and experience will bring much to our international secretariat and the movement as a whole,” said TI’s Board in a statement. “We express our deep gratitude to Daniel Eriksson for his great contribution to Transparency International in his five years as the CEO, and we warmly thank the close to one hundred candidates who applied from within and outside our movement in a highly competitive process.”
