Maruti Suzuki’s rail project registered as world’s first Verra VCS modal shift initiative

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced that its Gujarat in-plant railway siding has been registered as the world’s first Modal Shift Transportation Project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme of Verra.

The project shifts vehicle dispatches from road to rail, aiming to reduce emissions through the use of a more energy-efficient mode of transport. Over a 10-year crediting period from FY2023–24 to FY2032–33, the initiative is expected to generate approximately 170,000 carbon credits.

Emission reductions have been quantified using the AM0090 methodology under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Following independent verification, Verra will issue the carbon credits under its VCS programme.

Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the recognition reflects the company’s efforts to integrate operational efficiency with environmental responsibility by transitioning vehicle logistics from road to rail. He added that the project has reduced the carbon footprint of logistics operations while easing road congestion and lowering fossil fuel consumption.

The company said the initiative contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Climate Action (SDG 13).
