UAE-based developer Masdar and manufacturer Emsteel have completed a pioneering pilot project to produce green steel using green hydrogen. Located in Abu Dhabi, this project marks the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The process involves green hydrogen for iron extraction from iron ore, a critical phase in steel production, which has now achieved full operational status, with green steel production underway.
The green hydrogen used in the project has received certification from Avance Labs, the hydrogen code manager accredited by the International Tracking Standard Foundation, following the new ISO 19870 methodology for hydrogen gases. This certification was verified by Bureau Veritas, which served as the third-party assurance provider.
Masdar chief executive Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said, “This project demonstrates world-class innovation as a result of our partnership with Emsteel to produce green steel utilising green hydrogen.”
Emsteel group chief executive engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi added, “Emsteel is the first steelmaker in the world to capture part of its CO2 emissions, enabling us to operate with 45% less carbon intensity than the global average.”
