Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 team expands global carbon removal portfolio

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has announced a major expansion of its global carbon removal portfolio as part of a multi-year commitment aimed at accelerating the development of high-integrity climate solutions and supporting its long-term net-zero strategy.

The expanded initiative represents one of the most diverse and geographically distributed carbon removal portfolios in global sport. The programme is designed to strengthen the credibility and long-term impact of the carbon removals market while helping the team address residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through direct reductions.

Speaking at Economist Impact’s Sustainability Week alongside carbon removal marketplace CUR8 and project partners Carboneers and InPlanet, Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability at the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, said reducing emissions remains the organisation’s primary focus.

“Emissions reduction remains our priority, and high-quality carbon removals are essential for tackling the residual emissions that remain,” she said.

“By investing early across a diverse set of technologies and regions, we’re contributing to upscaling durable climate solutions while supporting the communities and environments in which we race.

“As a team, we are determined to engineer change on and off the track, so I’m proud to see our ambitious portfolio aiming to deliver meaningful impact far beyond our world.”

The portfolio has been designed to align with the Formula One race calendar, with projects located in key regions including Brazil, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as initiatives in Denmark and India.

Seven new projects across six carbon removal technologies have been added to the portfolio. These include Direct Air Capture, Biomass Storage and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), biochar, ocean alkalinity enhancement and enhanced rock weathering.

Guided by the Oxford Offsetting Principles, the investments are intended to support the scaling of durable and high-quality carbon removal technologies capable of addressing residual emissions that remain after direct mitigation efforts.

In total, the team is investing in approximately 18,900 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) through a mix of nature-based, hybrid and engineered carbon removal projects as part of its goal to achieve Race Team Control Net Zero by 2030.

The expanded portfolio will be curated and delivered by CUR8, a carbon removal marketplace that evaluates and verifies projects to ensure durability, transparency and strong methodological standards.

The initiative is also supported by team partners including Signify, UBS and Nasdaq, which share the ambition of advancing credible climate solutions. The team also acknowledged the pioneering efforts of companies such as Meta AI and Microsoft, whose early investments have helped accelerate the growth of the carbon removal sector.

Through this expanded portfolio, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team aims to contribute to building a stable and high-integrity carbon removals ecosystem capable of delivering the scale required to meet global climate targets.
